We have several surgeons in our group who are now offering patients robotic assisted knee replacement surgery. This is where the position of the knee replacement components is guided by a robot during the operation. Special X-rays are taken prior to the surgery to allow the position of the knee replacement to be patient specific. Further information is input during the surgery and fine tuning of the knee replacement can be made in terms of alignment, rotation, sizing , tension and implant accuracy. A robotic arm is then used to guide the tools and bone cuts prior to the implantation of the knee replacement. This is new technology in arthroplasty and we are pleased to have it available to Geelong and Western Vic. As with all new surgeon aid technology its exact place in surgery is yet to be established, and its role in relation to other methods are under investigation. Please speak to your surgeon is you have any questions about robotic surgery.
