On Wed within covid restrictions a special scientific meeting was held with Prof Gregory Bain, visiting from SA, and an expert in upper limb surgery. We were fortunate to have a great lecture and discussion about complex elbow fracture – dislocations highlighting pathoanatomy and surgical techniques.

Important scientific papers also discussed were ; a trial comparing plaster with surgery of 1mm displaced scaphoid fractures showing good results for both but earlier union with surgery; a trial which found a lower rate of redislocation with early surgery after traumatic shoulder dislocation vs a sling; a meta-analysis showing outcome scores of anatomic shoulder replacement have remained very good over the last decades; and a trial showing a high rate of associated injury with volar rim distal radius fractures.

It was wonderful to have high level, scientific discussions about orthopaedic shoulder, elbow and hand surgery.
